In the end, he almost lost his chance to confront Dr. Jarrell. After they reached the dock, Selena insisted they leave, immediately. Whether from fatigue or embarrassment, Brice couldn’t say, but she asked him to respect her wishes.

“Brice, don’t make this any worse than it already is. Let’s just say our goodbyes and go home. I can’t take any more tonight.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” he said. He’d have a talk with the doctor later, however. That was not negotiable. But right now, he just wanted Selena out of here and safe again.

So once they were out of the boat and everyone had calmed down, the doctor and his wife walked them up to the house to tell them goodbye.

“I’m so sorry, Selena,” Liz Jarrell said, giving Selena a quick hug. “I had no idea Greg was so drunk. I would have never allowed him to get on that boat with you if I’d noticed.” She sent her husband an accusing glance.

Dr. Jarrell had the good grace to look embarrassed. “The same goes for me. Gregory has been after me for weeks now to introduce the two of you and, well, I’m afraid the boy got ahead of himself tonight. I do apologize for allowing him to kidnap you like that. I didn’t mean to frighten you.” He held her hands in his. “You know you mean the world to me. When Greg sobers up, I intend to give the boy a thorough talking-to. You can count on that.”

Brice shot the doctor a challenging look, deciding now was a good time to confront him. “I’m counting on it. And…if you can’t do the job, I’ll be glad to explain things to Greg myself.”

“What are you implying?” Dr. Jarrell asked, his eyes slashing fire.

“I’m not implying anything,” Brice countered. “I’m telling you—again—you know the danger we’re facing. I explained this to you and your entire staff. Selena is a target and by letting that idiot take her out on that lake, you put her at risk. See that it doesn’t happen again. Keep that man away from Selena—even when he’s stone-cold sober.”

“Or?”

Brice wondered if the egotistical doctor was hard of hearing. “Or? Don’t you understand? This isn’t about you and me or an intern with a crush. This is about protecting Selena. There is no room for argument here.”

“Always the overprotective one, aren’t you?” Dr. Jarrell said, his tone demeaning. “I told you I’m sorry.”

Not good enough, but Brice didn’t push it for now. He and the doctor both settled for a good, old-fashioned stare-off, both scowling.

“Henry, let’s get back to our guests,” Liz suggested, her hand on her husband’s arm. “Brice is just concerned. We all are.” She looked at Selena again. “And I am truly sorry your visit had to end on such a bad note.”

“I’m all right,” Selena said, grasping Brice’s hands. “No harm done. It did rattle me a little bit but that’s because things have been so crazy lately, I’m afraid I’m a little paranoid.”

“No surprise, considering how antsy your friend here is,” the doctor said.
